One of several frankincense varieties, frankincense serrata – or Indian frankincense – is thought to be the oldest and most historically relevant. In addition to being one of three treasured gifts given to the infant Jesus and documented repeatedly in the Bible, frankincense was used extensively in early trade and the religious ceremonies of several nationalities. it was incorporated in Egyptian embalming practices, in the mural decorations of the 480 B.C. temple of Queen Hatsheput, and as an ingredient of the distinctive eyeliner depicted in images of ancient Egyptians. Pliny the Elder believed it an antidote to hemlock and an indisputable source of wealth and power for the Arabians.
Frankincense’s most widely celebrated medicinal property is anti-inflammatory. Even for this alone, it has a well-known place in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines. Modern science has also taken a keen interest in frankincense serrata, testing it as a natural substitute to ibuprofen and finding that it may have equal benefit without the negative side effects of long-term usage. Its anti-inflammatory benefits may even reach the brain – in at least one study it was found to reduce neural inflammation, enhance neuron length, and improve spatial memory formation.
