Black pepper comes from the peppercorn (Piper nigrum) plant and is one of the main spices deeply embedded in the history of world currency, trade, and expansion. It may be the first material used commonly as a preservative. It was found inside the nose of Ramses the Great, whose mummification occurred around 1213 BC. It prompted invasions, was payment in treaties, and is still one of the most widely traded spices today.
The intense early history of the spice trade, culminating in the discovery of North America by Christopher Columbus and the establishment of the long-awaited sea route between Europe and India by Vasco da Gama in 1498, was partially propagated by the exorbitant demand for pepper at the time. Venetian merchants and Arabian middlemen enjoyed monopolistic control over pepper’s sale and transport. Da Gama’s route led him to Calicut, the coastal region near the peppercorn’s homeland of Iddicki, India, and his return dropped the price of pepper in Portugal to one-fifth the Venetian price. Columbus, believing himself near India at the time, named the Native Americans “Indians” and the chile the “red pepper” to link his discovery to the spice.
Peppercorns have also been used in medicine by Egyptians and Indians for over 3,000 years. Early uses include anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant. Scientific studies have also suggested its ability to fight the malaria and sleeping sickness parasites. The spice may promote good gut health and weight loss, and has been used to fight ulcers, create cough remedies, soothe toothaches, and stop greying hair. Its oil form can be particularly effective against arthritic symptoms, both by aiding blood circulation and removing uric acid. It has also been known to ease muscle discomfort, enhance clarity, and empower the spirit.
