Litsea cubeba, sometimes called ‘may chang’, ‘Chinese pepper’, or ‘mountain pepper’, has beloved traditional uses despite not being extremely common. Relatively localized cultivation zones and close-lipped extraction practices may have kept this oil from becoming as Westernized as others. Among the peoples of its native China, Indonesia, Java, Sumatra, and similar regions, though, this native plant is a favorite effect, flavoring, and scent.

More accurately thought of as a spice or pepper, and genealogically related to cinnamon and laurel, litsea cubeba has a fresh, citrus scent described as the finer, sweeter, or spicier version of lemongrass. Its high citral content – up to 85% – is responsible for its citrus association and initial commercial spread as a lemongrass substitute. For years prior, the oil was famous in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, and among the Atayal aboriginal peoples of Taiwan. In TCM it was used for pain, digestive problems, backaches, and chills. In Ayurveda it was long considered an effective anti-depressant, and was used for asthma, acne, microbial infections, and indigestion. The Atayal used it for cooking, primarily to flavor the spicy traditional dish sambal and as a brewed medicinal tea.

Aromatherapy users that know this oil say it can help cleanse the soul and aid in expressing emotions in a healthy and constructive way. It is one of several oils that offers mood-boosting and energizing power while simultaneously relaxing the mind and calming internal stress. Litsea oil is thought an excellent astringent for oily skin, cure for arrhythmic heartbeats, respiratory aid, infected skin treatment, and household product that can disinfect while promoting an insect-free environment. Some suggest it can even help those suffering from chronic allergies.

Organic litsea cubeba essential oil from Prana Organic Plant Oils is an aromatherapy favorite. You will absolutely love the rich complex citrus scent of this oil.
