The clove is native to the Moluccas – otherwise known as the Spice Islands – in modern-day Indonesia. It was a part of the spice monopolies that occupied Europe in the 17th-18th centuries, and at one point the clove tree population was seized by the Dutch East India Company and burned down until only a small, controllable portion remained to drive up prices. Cloves are actually a flower bud, picked directly before blooming, and the common name comes from either the Latin clavus or the French clou, which both mean “nail”.
Rich in medical and culinary uses, the Han dynasty in China was the first to give written reference to the clove. Translated it was called “chicken-tongue spice” and was required by those who would meet with the emperor to chew as a breath freshener. In Medieval lore clove was considered a key treatment ingredient for the plague, and the herbalist Hildegard of Bingen used it to treat gout. Early Pakistani medicine used the clove for the common cold, asthma, and jaundice, and Traditional Chinese Medicine purports it for fungal infections, diarrhea, indigestion, impotence, and kidney disorders.
A main component of the clove, eugenol, is a chemical well-known to the medical community, particularly in dentistry. Clove oil is a long-standing home remedy for toothaches and eugenol was and still is a common component of cements used in sedative and temporary fillings. Other reported benefits of clove oil include: soothing the stomach to aid digestion, lessening cough severity, relieving gas or bloating, keeping the sinuses clear, and for arthritis. Emotional benefits of aromatherapy have included the facilitation of empowerment, acceptance, independence and freedom of spirit. It has also been linked to breaking patterns of co-dependency and victimization.
