Citrus has an extensive family tree, but both commonplace and exotic varieties descend from only five parental species, one of which is Citrus reticulata, referred to as green mandarin. Fossilized leaves in China suggest these citrus ancestors have existed for up to seven million years. In early cultures citrus was a source of wealth and trade and a proud cultural symbol. Citrus trees reportedly decorated mosaic tiles in the city of Pompeii, and were found in other early Christian and Roman artwork. Of all major citruses, the mandarin was one of the last introduced to Western culture and was shipped to England from China for the first time in 1805.

Many know citrus as a beneficial source of vitamin C and other nutrients. Ayurvedic medicine has referred to the mandarin specifically as a component of ‘happy oil’, laud its ability to bring peace to the mind, and use it to treat insomnia, acne, skin marks, nervous tension, and exhaustion. The sweetest of all citruses, mandarin oil can also be added as a flavoring to baked goods, smoothies, and teas. It can be used in cleaning products.

Green mandarin oil is further highlighted for relaxing and uplifting mental effects. Indeed, users praise its ability to manifest a positive outlook, elicit feelings of safety, and provide courage and calm during times of emotional distress. Beyond simple relaxing or sedative effects, the oil may have an impact on the extreme cases of epilepsy, hysteria, and panic. It’s referred to as a tonic, or a medicinal substance that can have beneficial whole-body effects through use over time, rather than use only in particular treatments. Following the Ayurvedic lead, modern users consider the oil in treatments including insomnia, skin conditions, digestion, circulation, and spasms.
