Palmarosa oil is said to have a ‘rosy’ or ‘woodsy’ smell, but its relations are beloved grasses like lemongrass and citronella. Its scientific name is similar to ginger grass, an oil which is occasionally used in aromatherapy. However, ginger grass is less popular than palmarosa. Other names for palmarosa include ‘rusa’, ‘rusha’, ‘rosha’, ‘Turkish geranium’, and the Ayurvedic term ‘rohisa’. The rose and geranium references in these names are because the oil was sometimes used to make adulterated versions of those oils. When left in the sun and mixed with a type of tree sap palmarosa becomes lighter and more rose-like; in fact, it is still sometimes used as a rose substitute in today’s scented products.
Many mental and emotional effects are ascribed to this oil. It’s said to promote self-acceptance, aid adaptability, and soften rigidity in times of need. It may also release jealousy and possessive emotions, soothe the spirit, calm the soul, and relax the body. It has a powerful cooling effect and is often used in hot conditions. Though it is now grown worldwide, it is native to India where it has long been an Ayurvedic medicine favorite.
Another of palmarosa’s celebrated effects is skin care. It is believed beneficial for eczema, psoriasis, boils, abscesses, acne, and to promote skin regeneration. A unique palmarosa feature is the ability to balance sebum for all skin types, regardless of oily or dryness levels. It tests as a better antiseptic than oils like lavender and primrose and may be useful in skin infection treatments.
