There are several types of cedar, including Cedar of Lebanon that was referenced biblically and used in the mummification process, Himalayan Cedar, Cedar of Cyprus, and Blue Atlas Cedar. Cedrus atlantica, commonly referred to as Blue Atlas Cedar or Atlas Cedar, was discovered for use in the Western world in 1827 by the Englishman P. B. Web. The tree is native to the Atlas Mountains and grows there thickly enough to form a continuous string from Morocco and Algeria. Since being introduced in Europe and the United States the tree has been favored in nurseries and large gardens for its striking appearance. A Blue Atlas Cedar was even planted on the South Lawn of the White House and former Present Carter designed a treehouse within its branches for his daughter Amy.

Although many of the oldest medical references are to the Lebanese cedar, Cedrus atlantica has similar uses and Ayurvedic medicinal sources claim its benefit in treatments for acne, eczema, bronchitis, to remove toxins, purify the blood, stimulate the respiratory system, and calm nerves. A commonly known property of cedar is its ability to repel insects, and its strong wood is especially desired in furniture-making for this reason.

Modern users of cedarwood oil believe it able to relax and calm the mind, relieve tension, promote restorative sleep, and sooth the spirit. Cedar is a recognizable, memorable, and pleasant scent and may provide positive mental stimulus for even just this reason. It is often used in soaps and other personal care products and can be particularly effective in reducing skin and hair oiliness. Cedarwood oil also has suggested effectiveness in removing mucus, regulating menstruation, affecting sore muscles, protecting wounds, and as a diuretic to remove toxins.
