This flowering plant has a colorful history spanning folklore, economic innovation, and medicine. It’s name comes from the Latin clarus – meaning “clear“– a reference to early use removing particles from the eyes. The Physicians of Myddfai, a legend-filled group from Wales who documented medicinal findings in several 14th century manuscripts, reported that drinking an eggshell amount of clary would dispel evil tempers and envy. The qualities of the flower were esteemed by the 17th century writer Nicholas Culpeper, who believed that clary could help remove splinters and thorns, restore weak backs, and heal the kidneys. He recommended incorporating the plant into the diet by breading and frying its leaves as a medicinal snack.
Clary sage has yet additional meanings around the world. One of its common names is muscatel sage, coming from the German practice of altering the flavor of Rhine (white) wine to imitate that from the muscat grape. It is also called “the woman’s oil” due to reported benefits for hormone fluctuations, menstrual pains, and menopause. It’s considered a natural substitute to the chemical fixer agents (making a scent last longer) used in cosmetics and perfumes.
Modern users believe this reputation is not without cause. Recent studies have noted positive effects of the oil on depression, anxiety, and menstrual pain, as well as possible effects on cancer and high blood pressure. Several breeds of sage – including clary sage – has been noted as having positive effects on mental alertness, focus, and memory, perhaps even in Alzheimer’s cases. To routine users, this essential oil has been known to release insecurity, loneliness, and stagnation, and provide confidence and relaxed mental strength. Some have particularly noted its ability to provide courage when facing the unknown.
