This low-growing member of the pine family is famous in health communities for diuretic properties and for calming the nerves. The Egyptians used it as a laxative, and other Native American groups used it for infections, arthritis, and general wound care. In more fanciful early references, juniper was said to ward against sorcery and protect a house against entry by a witch. It was a juniper bush that the prophet Elijah fell asleep under while escaping the bloodthirsty Queen Jezebel in the Bible. In Yugoslavia the juniper bush was considered an indispensable cure-all, and in French hospitals it was burned to clear and sanitize the air.
