Blue tansy is known for its beautiful rich dark blue color. However, the species that blue tansy belongs to, is often confused. Tanacetum annuum is the Latin name of the plant you want for your essential oil. Tanacetum annuum is related to Tanacetum vulgare, the common tansy, but is much rarer, and does not contain the known toxic component of thujone. Because if its rarity, blue tansy oil is very expensive, and some suppliers adulterate it by mixing in the less expensive common Tanacetum vulgare variety. Adulterated blue tansy should be avoided for toxicity. Reputable sources use 100% Tanacetum annuum, and the unadulterated oil is known for its deep blue color. We offer a quality unadulterated product that is organically grown.
The blue tansy flower is sometimes called “Moroccan chamomile”. While there is in fact a species of chamomile native to Morocco and named after the country, blue tansy may be called that due to its chemical similarity to German chamomile. German chamomile and blue tansy oil both contain the chemical chamazulene, which is responsible for the blue color of the oil and its ability to soothe skin inflammation. Both flowers are also known to help conditions like allergies, eczema, joint pain, rashes, and sprains.
While its research application in aromatherapy is more recent, pure blue tansy oil may help put the mind at ease, sooth stress, calm anxiety and irritation, and relax the spirit. Anti-anxiety results could be due to chemical components of linalool, carvone, and carvacrol, which many believe to have such effect. Other components include sabinene – which can reduce skin blemishes – and camphor, which has been recognized by the FDA as a possible treatment for coughs (through topical chest application) and itch relief. Other plausible uses include for emphysema, to heal bruises (the oil has rubefacient qualities), to treat sciatica, reduce fevers, and ease varicose veins by stimulating the circulatory system.
