The black spruce is an evergreen tree many associate with its use as a Christmas tree. It is found in the Northeastern United States and Canada, while the closely related blue and Sitka spruces are the more prevalent varieties in other regions. In areas where it most flourishes it comprises about 20% of the Christmas tree market and is also used to create pulp, paper, lumber, and as fuel.

The black spruce had many aboriginal purposes – in addition to utilitarian functions like making fish traps, snowshoe frames, and drying racks, native tribes throughout America and Canada used the tree for medicinal purposes. The Algonquin reportedly used the gum as a salve, while the Cree mixed it with grease to treat burns and chewed the cones for sore throats and toothaches. Eskimos may have used the gum for respiratory infections, the Ojibwa applied root extracts for stomach pains, and the Potawatomi ground up the bark as a disinfectant. The black spruce was also used to create edible commercial products like spruce gum and spruce beer. The first commercial chewing gum factory used the resin of the black spruce tree as its main ingredient before less brittle materials were found.

While the bark, gum, and roots no longer have such wide-spread uses, black spruce oil, derived from needles and bark, may still have many benefits. To users of the oil, it has been known to release lethargy and melancholy, breed feelings of harmony and good will, and ease the spirit. It may help fortify the immune system, treat respiratory symptoms, and remedy skin conditions. It is also used in soaps and cleaners for scent, disinfectant, and relaxant qualities, and can promote a healthy coat in pets.
