Citronella has been valued for centuries, as evidence by its inclusion in Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Ayurvedic medicinal system. There is even a tale of Alexander the Great becoming intoxicating while traveling through the plant’s native region, as the elephant he was riding kept crushing it underfoot. Its most common use is as an insect repellent, and it was registered with the EPA in 1948 for that purpose. It is still one of only 7 registered repellents.

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses citronella as a treatment for rheumatism, poor digestion, and fevers. In Ayurvedic medicine citronella is called ‘pangiri’ and is used to alleviate aggravation, loneliness, and feelings of disharmony. Ayurvedic practitioners also make use of its anti-fungal properties and apply it to athlete’s foot, candida, dandruff, and ringworm. It is used to clear up oil buildup and acne, and to treat toothaches, skin redness or irritation, and headaches. Citronella belongs to the grass family and is easy to grow, making it readily available in the household, although some erroneously believe the plant itself has the same deterrent potency as the extracted oil.

Modern medicinal practitioners recognize many of the same benefits as the old systems, including as an anti-fungal skin treatment, a parasitic cleanse, and to reduce inflammation and pain. It can be used as a kitchen cleanser and a refreshing room spray. Users note its ability to relieve anxiety, sadness and negative feelings, inspire feelings of hope, and lift the spirit. Some link it to the arousal of pleasant memories and the impediment of headaches and colds. It also has some interesting pet applications, including in collars to dissuade barking, as a spray to keep dogs off furniture, and for deterring stray cats.

Organic citronella essential oil from Prana Organic Plant Oils is an aromatherapy staple. You will absolutely love the refreshing scent of this oil.
