Most eucalyptus varieties are native to Australia and have been harvested there for centuries. The trees are a substantial part of the Australian ecosystem, comprising about 75% of its forests and sustaining wildlife. Koalas, in fact, can survive on a diet of eucalyptus leaves alone. The trunks are used for firewood and construction, while the bark is harvested for paper-making.  Upon discovering one species of eucalyptus, the British nicknamed it “Sydney peppermint” and adopted the uses recommended by the aborigines, including as an antiseptic, fever reducer, muscle relaxant, and for colic and diarrhea. Although native to Australia, it is also grown and harvested in other parts of the world including India.

Eucalyptus has a heroic reputation as a malaria deterrent. When the disease was spreading but not understood, locals in infected areas noticed that those living in proximity to eucalyptus trees were less likely to sicken than those that were not. Many thought malaria came from the air and that the oil-packed leaves and scent of the tree purified its surroundings. In time, scientists realized that eucalyptus trees rapidly absorb water in swamp-like conditions, eliminating mosquito habitats. Eucalyptus grove planting became a widespread tactic in mosquito-spread disease prevention, and is still an effective method today.

Eucalyptus has over 700 varieties, although only a handful are considered for medicine and aromatherapy. The globulus variety (Eucalyptus globulus) is perhaps the most common and is called “blue gum”. The familiar description of eucalyptus – that it is applied to ease the muscles after a workout and help with respiration – is often in reference to the globulus variety, and other varieties are compared and contrasted against it for differentiation. It is known to relieve exhaustion, improve mental clarity, sooth sore muscles, and rejuvenate the spirit. Some say it has a “clearing” effect on the brain and emotions.

Organic eucalyptus globulus from Prana Organic Plant Oils is an aromatherapy staple. You will absolutely love the refreshing scent of this oil.
