The bergamot fruit belongs to the Rutaceae family, which includes the lemon, orange, tangerine and grapefruit. It is a cross between the bitter orange and the lemon, inheriting the size of the orange with the general color and shape of the lemon. It is historically prevalent in the European countries surrounding the Calbria region of Italy, where it is almost exclusively grown. In fact, a small stretch of Italian land contributes over 90% of the world’s bergamot supply, as unique soil needs make it difficult to produce elsewhere.

The bergamot appeared as early as 1686 in quality perfumes and decorative displays in wealthy gardens. After early industrial success its application spread, and between 1686 and now it has been used in soaps, toothpastes, deodorants, tanning lotions, candies, ice creams, and liquors. Today, one of the most common bergamot uses is as a main ingredient in Earl Grey tea. The English bergamot – and Italian bergamotto – is thought to originate from the Turkish beg-a-mudi, meaning “Pears of the Prince”. The phrasing may relate to a painting of the bergamot pear depicted in 1715. Supposedly, visual similarities between the pear and the orange prompted the name adoption, and now the citrus variety is the better recognized.

Bergamot has been known to create a feeling of freshness, stimulate joy and energy, soothe the nerves, reduce tension, and relax the spirit. It is thought an effective anti-infective, particularly against types of skin bacteria. On its own or combined with lavender, bergamot may calm the brain by instigating a release of serotonin, endorphin, and noradrenalin. It has also been applied to reduce nerve pain, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Science suggest the components of linalool, limonene, and pinene particularly may be responsible for bergamot’s emotional health benefits.
