Sweet orange is produced prolifically in the United States and Brazil but has unknown origins. Best known for improving skin, bringing about cheerfulness, and supporting the immune system, traditional medicines have long used it for acne and chronic stress. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is a treatment for colds, coughs, and digestion stimulation. Dried sweet orange rinds were once used to treat anorexia. In China sweet orange long symbolized good fortune, while in old Europe it was a sign of richness.

The first literary reference to a generic orange came from the 500 BC Chinese book Yu Kung. The origin of sweet orange – now commonly just called ‘orange’ – is unknown, although the fruit does not grow wildly. It’s a cross between mandarin and pomelo, and may have been first cultivated in southwestern China or the Himalayas. It was introduced to the broader world by Portuguese explorers and to its North American home of Florida by Ponce de Leon. Christopher Columbus brought sweet orange seeds with him to the New World, showing the prevailing esteem for the fruit.

Cosmetically, orange may reduce acne, dryness, and the appearance of cellulite. It has an interesting effect on water retention and could help the body detoxify. Like many citruses it is common in cleaning, although it goes further by helping kill off ants and houseflies. Sweet orange oil may ease tensed-up muscles, promoting relaxation and physical functionality.

A favorite among the citrus oils, sweet orange may create a positive mood and the impression of warmth. It’s been known to induce relaxation, alleviate anger, bring pleasant thoughts to mind, and lift the mood and spirit.
