Sage may possess the longest record of use of any culinary and medicinal herb. It’s etymological root ‘salvere’ – translated ‘to save’ – bears tribute to several early uses. Despite being a wonderful flavoring celebrated in recipes worldwide, sage’s original food application was preservation. It was one of the herbs Charlemagne mandated his subjects grow in the Capitulare de villis, a text outlining the governing guidelines of his kingdom. Hieronymus Bock, a German botanist, stated: “Of all the bushes, there is scarcely a bush like Sage” in a 1555 quote before listing its many culinary and medicinal uses.

Sage’s history stretches back further than this. The Ebers papyrus, a compilation of Egyptian medical scrolls dated 1500 BC, lists sage as a remedy for itching. Egyptians also reputedly used sage in teas or topical applications for fertility treatments. Hippocrates recognized early its ability to stop bleeding and aid menstrual complaints. Dioscorides also noted uses in treating ulcers, sores, hoarseness, and cough. Gargling sage leaf tea has long been a folk remedy for sore throats. Others recommend it as a tonic for digestion or memory boosting effects like rosemary.

Other uses today include moisturizing the skin, slowing the progression of wrinkling, acting as a natural laxative, aiding food digestion, and activating hormones when imbalanced. Users believe it able to induce mental stability and alertness, alleviate fatigue, increase energy, and motivate the spirit. In testing thyme and sage were identified as the most effective oils for attacking dangerous bacteria strains like E. coli. Sage is thought to reduce the effect of toxin exposure and alleviate skin and gut inflammation. It is a stimulating oil some use for arousing vitality and the senses.
