For many, lemongrass is one of the first oils that comes to mind in aromatherapy context. Out of 55 Poaceae grass varieties, two lemongrass species are widely sold: West Indian (Cymbopogon citratus) and East Indian (Cymbopogon flexuosus). West Indian lemongrass is typically used in foods, drinks, and flavorings, especially in cuisines like Chinese, Indian, and Thai. East Indian lemongrass, described here, is used in essential oil production and pharmaceuticals.
Lemongrass has a lengthy history, with its earliest surviving reference from the 17th century Philippines and “fever grass” being a long-standing nickname in its native cultures for early uses. The worldwide spread of lemongrass, however, is often attributed to several key events. In 1905 the Sri Lankan researcher J.F. Jovit visited South India and took home several plant varieties – fascinated, he set up a cultivation farm to study it. News spread, and by 1947 the plant was also being cultivated in Haiti and Florida. The related grass citronella was then exhibited for its essential oil effects at the World’s Fair in 1951, further spreading the family’s reputation.
Of course, lemongrass built its own reputation through years of productive application. Often used to treat fevers, relieve digestion, reduce aches, and detoxify the body, lemongrass drew attention and became popular in the pharmaceutical industry to generate vitamin A and citral-based products. All-natural product substitute brands like Tom’s of Maine began incorporating lemongrass oil and advertising its odor-fighting benefits. In aromatherapy lemongrass scent is known to create a sense of energetic cleansing and releasing, and users find it able to boost self esteem and confidence, instill a sense of hope and mental strength, uplift the spirit, and calm the mind.
