Outside of its native lands –Mynamar, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Australia – the cajeput tree is known for the essential oil it produces, which bears many of the same properties as tea tree. In Southeast Asia, it has been used as a household medicine for generations, and the soft white bark of the tree has been cultivated for uses as caulking, packing materials, stuffing for pillows and mattresses, and insulation. The bark expands enough in moisture to provide a water-tight seal in boats. The name cajeput is a descriptive term related to the Malay kayu putih, meaning “white wood”.

In local remedies, cajeput has been applied to a range of conditions including gout, rheumatism, colic, cholera, burns, cramps, and skin diseases. The aborigines in Australia reportedly used the cajeput leaves and stems in treatment of aches and pains, either through steeping in hot water or by crushing and sniffing for headaches. One of the first medical references to cajeput may be in the book “The Natural History of Simple Drugs” from 1876, which lists possible uses from dysentery to cystitis.

In modern holistic medicine, cajeput oil is applied or diffused to treat skin infections, relieve congestion, help arthritis, muscular, and sciatic pain, or soothe colds and sore throats. Its ability to ease under-the-skin pain may be due to the chemical component cineole, which can irritate the topical skin in such a way to relieve pain underneath. It has been known to lessen compulsions, aid in the breaking of bad habits, free the mind from addictions, and assist the spirit in recovery. Users also recommend this oil for providing a mental “pick-me-up” at the end of a long day.
