This beloved herb is celebrated in folklore, literature, medicine, and several monarchies. Shakespeare’s Opehlia petitions Hamlet: “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance, pray you love, remember”. This bears tribute to long associations between rosemary and memories of loved ones. Springs of rosemary were common at graves and funerals for centuries, and have been found in Egyptian tombs from 3000 BC.  Modernly ANZAC Day – Australian and New Zealand Army Corps Day – honors fallen soldiers with rosemary pinned to lapels. Rosemary was also customary at European weddings, where it was worn by the couple or given as gifts.

The world’s pioneering botanists stumbled early onto rosemary’s benefits. Dioscorides’ book De Materia Medica, long the standard in herbalism, recommends rosemary for “warming faculties”. Nicholas Culpepper, foundational to modern pharmaceuticals, reported benefits to bodies’ natural heat and used rosemary as a cure-all for colds, forgetfulness, and headaches. In a famous tale the 72-year-old Queen of Hungary recovered from semi-paralysis by drinking a rosemary concoction – she claimed to regain so much strength and beauty that the 26-year-old King of Poland sought her hand in marriage.

In modern times rosemary’s early associations have moved beyond legend. Users highlight its ability to increase concentration, stimulate mental activity, lower stress, and lift the spirit. Several studies link it to remarkable increases in information recall. It is thought to slow the breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurochemical lacking in Alzheimer's patients. As early botanists observed, rosemary may have unique abilities to warm the body and could help those with chronically cold hands or circulatory diseases. It is a natural insecticide, pain reducer comparable to acetaminophen, and celebrated hair loss prevention and skin care product.
